Headache types
Are there different types of headache? How can we distinguish between them?
There are primary and secondary headaches. Secondary ones are very common. Primary headaches are those that fall specifically into the field of neurology, and there are 4 main groups. Tension-type headache is a dull, pressing or aching pain, often reported by patients as if a tire is squeezing their head. It may be associated with tenderness of the scalp, neck and shoulders. A migraine headache starts off as a hemiparesis, often accompanied by light and sound avoidance, nausea, vomiting, and possibly visual disturbances. It is characterised by a duration of 4-72 hours, and the drugs used for tension-type headaches do not help to relieve it. The third type is cluster headache. This is much less common, more common in men, and is a very severe unilateral pain with redness of the conjunctiva and tearing of the eye. The fourth group is other primary headaches.
Chronic migraine affects 1-2% of the world's population (two-thirds of them women), which in Hungary means nearly 150,000 patients!
How can headaches be treated?
Basically, two things are important. acute pain relief, which is what happens when we know what type of headache it is after the neurologist has examined the patient and they have a headache. The other is the so-called. interval treatment, which aims to reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms. Sometimes it is enough to give lifestyle advice, but if that is not enough, we can help with medical treatment.
What will happen and how?
The neurological examination:
starts with taking a medical history and reviewing previous findings. The examination is completely painless and consists of testing of the brain nerves, muscle strength, coordination, reflexes, gait, movement patterns and sensory disturbances. This is followed by a discussion of the investigation plan and therapeutic goals, writing a referral, starting treatment, prescription.
